According to recent estimates, more than 337 million people speak English as their first language, with possibly some 350 million speaking it as a second language. It is one of the most widely used languages in the world. The reasons for the position of English are the imperialism, and the economical and political importance of English-speaking countries. It is very important to note these facts, for reasons of tourism. In our country, this activity is increasing. People of many parts of the world are looking at Panama as a great place to explore, thanks to the image that we are projecting to other nations. But this good impression can be affected by problems of communication and also by our behavior.
Most of the tourists speak English. So, we should not have any difficulty exchanging few words with them if we know English. Nevertheless, the reality is other: Many Panamanians do not speak English. This does not only affect tourism. Knowledge of English is essential to get a job and many people from Panama do not realize this fact.
The situation begins at school. The educational system in our territory does not promote properly the knowledge of the language. The results of English test at the University of Panama support this detail. As a result, our students graduate with low levels of English knowledge, or even without it.
Panama offers a lot of job opportunities, especially for young people. At this moment, the call center’s industry is at full swing, but the citizens are not prepared. So, this creates an internal competition between the companies that could either favor the employee or worsen our unemployment. The employees could benefit from the fact that these companies may raise the salaries in order to attract them from other companies. On the other hand, our country could face serious unemployment issues if these companies decide to leave our country because of the lack of English knowledge of our citizens. Our country already has a high unemployment problem, just imagine what would happen if they leave.
The construction of the new locks will attract many foreign investors that want to participate in it. The administration of these new areas demands more human resources. Thus, the employment will increase, but it requires knowing English.
Uniting all these facts makes it simple: If we want to improve ourselves, it is very necessary to speak English. It’s time to become more useful.
